Ascenscions

Should we bring them back, and if so, what changes to the system should be made? Would love to hear your opinions folks.

Am I to assume by the silence that no one on this forum has an opinion, or doesn't care about the topic at hand? Opinions, please, people. You know what they say, can't make bricks without clay. Razz

If you'd be so kind as to explain what this is/was? Afterwards I shall give my opinion.

It was a rather interesting system to begin with heh. Some would say it made the characters in the end far too powerfull no matter what high end or low end gear they had lol due to the stat/feat and skill increases that people got with them. If they are brought back you'd need to control them so things don't get out of hand like they had back on the old SoS.

Essentially, the system was;

- Level character to max non-gold level.
- Write application, in which you requested a new race/appearance/feats/skills to start your character over with.
- Began your character afresh, with the stat adjustments. These were stackable from ascension to ascension.

I feel the system was popular, but inherently flawed, so if people would like to brainstorm ideas, if they'd like to see the system back. I'm somewhat lost, and was never really in favour of it to begin with.

Opinions nao plox? Razz

The system was great, imo, if completely overpowered. My final build was lethal at 1st level after 3 ascentions xD

I'd say increase some of the values of certain bonus abilitles, but otherwise, I'm all for adding in ascentions.

Current idea for a system;

Ascension process - Application stating what you want, gagued by DMs, accepted/rejected. If accepted, character restarts from level 1 with old items, with the option to retain badges, and with the ascension benefits.

Ascension limit - 3

Points per Ascension - 3

Possible benefits;

Permanent stat increases; 1 point for every +2 to a stat.

Racial Metamorphosis - 3 Points. (LA Cap of 0-3/4 in exceptional circumstances still applies.)

Spell-like ability - 1 point for every spell-level of the ability.

Ascension points not spent can be carried over to the next ascension.

W.I.P. looking for ideas and comments.

Re: Ascenscions

Post  Black13 on Thu May 19, 2011 1:40 am

The real question lays in how powerful do we want to allow ascended characters to become?

Is 1 ascenscion point really worth a +2 to a stat, the equivalent of 2 epic feats?

If this is the case, then lines should be drawn, lest everyone have a super-hero/villain within a month.

Personally, I like the old setup.

Ascenscion points.

1 point - +15 hp at 1st level.
A non-epic, non-prerequisite feat.
A non-class-specific feat or ability.
+1 to any one stat
+5 to any skill

2 points - A non-epic, requisite feat (example, a character gaining improved crit - without meeting the base attack prerequisite)
A low-power monster skin (bio required, approval of at least 1 DM required)
A class specific feat or ability

3 points - An epic feat
A high-power advanced monster skin (bio required, red token required, multiple DM approval required)
+1 Regeneration
Unique rp non-droppable item (DM interaction required, quest event required, to be worked on with DM and player)

These are just some examples of the old system that I remember, from WAY back on SD. Rather than copy and paste the old rules, I rewrote them as best I remember. And above all, this is just a suggestion, and one we sorely need, IMO.

Open to change and suggestions, naturally.

Well, let's be fair, +1 in any stat, is pretty much useless as spit, if you make it two, they actually reap some small benefit from it.

+15 HP...Can agree with I suppose.

I would think any one feat, within reasonable bounds, would be one point.

I can agree with +5 to a skill.

"Monster Skins" would count as the aforementioned 3 point racial metamorphosis, given a lot of benefits come with them.

I would think 2 points, for a point of regeneration.

Can agree with three points for some kind of "artifact weapon" or some such.

Still open to more suggestions.

I would say a Red Token or Higher is required for a Ascension maybe.

Ascension Guidelines

Table of Contents:

Mechanics Details (This Post)
Subraces, Templates, and the Like
Roleplay Requirements
Ascension Points and Mechanics

Mechanics Details:

Requirements:

A Roleplay Background of the ascension must be posted along with the Ascension. The Team may request for more information, depending on how detailed the background is.
Ascensions can apply either to the current character, or a New character. If applied to a New character, the old character will be Permanently retired.
Some ascension-requests will be decided on a Case-by-Case basis, depending on the content of said ascension.

Out of Character regulations:

Between ascensions of the same character, a waiting period of One Month(30 days) is mandatory.
Between ascensions of the same account, a waiting period of One Week(7 days) is mandatory.
Certain extremely-exotic Races will be considered on a Case-by-Case basis, but may-or-may-not be approved.
Not everyone will be able to play the same thing as someone else. We don't want a flood of nearly-identical concepts.

A note on Past Ascensions:

If an ascension is found to have bonuses that are completely out-of-balance with the current system, the current Team has the authority to revise and review those ascension bonuses in light of the current system.

A note on 'Special' Characters:

Everyone is allowed, at base, one Special Character. More than one special character per-person will be considered on a Case-by-Case basis. Roleplaying ability, roleplay token, past ascensions, and past characters will be looked at, and evaluated alongside the request.

Subraces, Templates, and the Like:

Table of Contents:

Mechanics Details
Subraces, Templates, and the Like (This Post)
Roleplay Requirements
Ascension Points and Mechanics

Subraces:

Ascensions requesting subraces will typically be First-level ascensions. Second and Third level ascensions with subraces will be rare, but by no means impossible.
Acquired-template subraces will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
As an accepted standard, no subraces beyond a level adjustment of +4 will generally be approved. However, it may be -considered- toning down the request to a +4 or lower adjustment, on a case-by-case basis.
Subraces must be cited from a Sourcebook. Dragon Magazine and Dungeon Magazine material will not be considered, at this time. A somewhat-custom-subrace may also be worked on with a DM on the ascension team, in the event that it is found to be appropriate.
In-Character and Roleplay justification for the subrace must be given.
In the event that a subrace is approved, but is not roleplayed by the one requesting it, it may be removed at the discretion of the Ascension Team. This applies to past ascensions as well.

Variant 'subraces':

Certain Environmental and Standard Variations of the Core Races will be allowed without an ascension.
This is limited -only- to the Surface races that are generally found within Faerun and other settings. (Sun, Moon, Arctic, Wood, and Wild Elves, for example. Other examples include Ghostwise halflings, Gold dwarves, and the like. Simply check with a DM beforehand.)

Veteran Subrace:

Requirement: 10,000 Zombie Kills
Charisma: +2
Constitution: +2
Dexterity: +1
Darkvision
Immunity misc: disease
Regeneration: +1
Reflex: +2
Hide Skill: +5
Move Silently Skill: +5

Roleplay Requirements:

Table of Contents:

Mechanics Details
Subraces, Templates, and the Like
Roleplay Requirements (This Post)
Ascension Points and Mechanics

Non-subrace Ascension RP Requirement:

A background/biography will be required for every ascension, including non-subrace ascensions.
The detail-requirement on a non-subrace ascension is significantly less than that of a subrace ascension.
These are the most common type of Ascensions. They represent the character learning and developing new skills.

Subrace Ascension and RP Requirement:

A background/biography of excellent quality and detail will be required for every subrace ascension.
The detail-requirement is substantial in a subrace ascension, and you may be asked to expand upon it more, depending on how much detail you give.
These are somewhat more rare, but still very attainable. This represents the character having a non-normal heritage.

Acquired Template Ascension and RP Requirement:

A background/biography of excellent quality and detail will be required for acquired-template subrace ascensions.
These will be somewhat rare, but still attainable. These templates represent the character gaining a subrace through some method or another.
The detail-requirement is substantial in a template-ascension, and you may be asked to expand upon it more, depending on the amount and quality of detail given.

Ascension Points and Mechanics

Table of Contents:

Mechanics Details
Subraces, Templates, and the Like
Roleplay Requirements
Ascension Points and Mechanics (This Post)

Ascension Number, and Points:

First Ascension: 4 points
Second Ascension: 8 points
Third Ascension: 12 points

'Purchasable' bonuses:

Standard Feats: 1 point each
Skill points: 1 point for 5 skill points
Attributes: 2 points for 1 attribute point
Health Points: 2 points for 10 health points. Max of one per ascension.
Epic Feats: 2 points each; Note: Not all epic feats are viable. Each feat will be considered in turn.
Veteran Subrace: 4 points
Custom Title: Free; Second Ascension and Beyond only, or with -very- good RP reasons.
Custom Appearance with Subrace: 4 points
Items: Case-by-Case basis. Determined on Request.
Subrace/Acquired Template: 4 points base. 2 points with outstanding biography/backstory (and full (Active) team agreement).
Special Abilities: These will be rare, and on a case-by-case basis. Points will be decided on a case-by-case basis, depending on the ability.
Note: Bonuses do not work in reverse to gain more points. You cannot take negatives to anything through an ascension, save for subrace negatives.

How Ascensions Function:

Depending on the bonuses gained from an ascension, your character may be left at the level they were at.
If the Bonuses are considered by the Team to be worthy of restarting at level one, then the character will begin at level one, with a 500 experience bonus, and the ability to use Spire, Dragon, and Gelzburg items.
For each ascension, the points spent on the previous ascension must be re-spent to keep the bonuses. It is not -required- that you keep the bonuses, but you usually would keep them. If it doesn't make In Character sense to lose them, and it is not explained, you will have to retake them.
You must have prerequisites for Feats. Not counting Skill, Level, or things that are not attainable within the system/level cap. If you're unsure, PM me (Archon/YWNKW) and ask.

"Mechanics details";

I can agree with the requirements section, plus I think I will throw in the prerequisite of a red roleplaying token as you suggested.

OOC Regulations, can agree with.

Same with the note on past ascensions.

Note on special characters? No thanks.

Subraces, Templates, Etc;

Not the first line, Agreed up to custom subraces, just no to those.

Yes to the rest of the subrace paragraph.

Mhmm. No to the variant subraces thing, already a system for that.

Axeing the veteran subrace.

Roleplay Requirements;

Can agree with the whole section.

The points system needs rebuilt from the ground up, imo. And the bonuses available to be purchased.

Disagreeing with the entire last post, basically.

Anyone else's thoughts, or should I start reconstructing the point-buy system?
